Job Title: Senior Accountant

Status: Full-Time, Exempt, Benefited, Professional Staff

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer

SUMMARY

The Senior Accountant is able to perform difficult, complex, and analytical work with high levels of accuracy. The Senior Accountant is part of the team responsible for the school's general accounting function and oversight of internal controls. They will maintain and safeguard records for the institution's assets, including fixed assets, investments, bonds, and gift accounting.

RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer within the business office but also works closely with the Director of Operations. This position interacts with administrators, faculty, staff, parents, vendors, outside agencies, and auditors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Job responsibilities are assigned by the Chief Financial who may, in their sole discretion, alter, add to, or eliminate job assignments at any time, with or without prior notice. The Senior Accountant is knowledgeable of accounting standards, audit, and internal control protocols, all applicable federal and state statutes, familiar with the operations of the department, and is proficient with the technology designed to support that operations.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Accounting & Financial Operations:

  • Assist in month-end and year-end close activities, including reconciliation of accounts such as cash, investments, pre-paid expenses, fixed assets, leases, accrued expenses, and inter-company receivables/payables.
    1. Fixed Assets: Maintain and reconcile the fixed asset ledger, including depreciation schedules and asset tracking.
    2. Investments: Assist with the preparation of year-end audit schedules, prepare notes for financial statements, review investment balances and adjust entries.
    3. Pledge & Gift Accounting: new pledges, discounting of pledges, write-offs, and auditing of working papers.
    4. Bond Accounting: Assist with recordkeeping, reporting, and reconciliation of bonds.
    5. Insurance: Prepare Prepaid Expense schedule, monthly journal entry to record expense, prepare year-end schedule.
    6. Workers’ Compensation Insurance: Identify service vendors, prepare audit working papers, audit the WCI audit results, prepare year-end working papers.
    7. Sales & Inventory: Track and reconcile inventory for the Student Store Café, Athletics Spirit Pack, and miscellaneous inventory for admissions, advancement, and marketing.
  • Assist with the preparation and filing of federal Form 990 and required state-level filings, ensuring compliance with all nonprofit reporting standards
  • Perform research, reconciliation, auditing, tracking, and other general accounting tasks as requested and necessary to meet department reporting deadlines.
  • Maintain coordination of database activities between Blackbaud modules and banking activities.
  • Assist in preparing monthly departmental financial reports and reconciliations, as well as other reports or projects as directed by the CFO.

Contract and Insurance Administration:

  • Work closely with the Director of Operations on risk management functions, including insurance renewals, claims reporting, and maintaining a data archive of enterprise risk management.
  • Order insurance certificates associated with contracts.
  • Tracks and maintains insurance certificates required by contracts.
  • Assures that insurance certificates include contractually required language and insurance amounts.

KNOWLDEGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of non-profit accounting is essential.
  • Experience in independent schools or similar environments is highly preferred.
  • Strong technology skills, especially demonstrating excellence in Microsoft Suite. Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge software is required.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills with a proactive, solution-oriented mindset.
  • Assist with the preparation and filing of federal Form 990 and required state-level filings, ensuring compliance with all nonprofit reporting standards.
  • Self-motivated, ability to multi-task, excellent work habits, including a willingness to work the hours necessary to get the job done, especially when important deadlines cause greater than normal departmental pressures.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position may supervise and review activities and work of accounting department staff, in collaboration with the Chief Financial Officer and Controller.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or closely related field; Master's degree preferred; and at least three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. CPA or CMA certification is preferred.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

COMPENSATION PHILOSOPHY

Anticipated salary range: $100,000 – 115,000
