MONTAUK
The best way to see Montauk is probably on bikes. You can rent them
at the hotel, they even have tandem ones!
Things to see:
Montauk Point Lighthouse - Located at the very eastern end of Long Island, the lighthouse was commissioned by President George Washington in 1792. It is the fourth oldest lighthouse still active in the U.S. It can be seen for 19 nautical miles. Climb to the enclosed deck at the top for a great view. Visitors Center & exhibits. (631) 668-2544.
Montauk Harbor - The center of the fishing industry it has many marinas, hundreds of party, charter and commercial fishing boats as well as boat rentals. Many world record fish have been caught in and around Montauk waters. Montauk is often called “The Fishing Capital of the World.” Prepare to spend some time browsing through its many interesting shops and enjoy dockside dining at the local restaurants.
Beaches:
Ditch Plains Beach - Our favourite beach! 2 miles east of the village. It boasts spectacular cliffs and rock formations at its western end. An easy bike ride from Sole East. Enjoyed by surfers & swimmers. Lifeguards. Parking by permit only.
Edison Beach - Town beach located at the end of South Edison St. Lifeguards on duty. Restrooms & street parking nearby.
Gin Beach - At the end of East Lake Drive, it lies on Block Island Sound. Roped in swim area & usually calmer surf than the ocean. Lifeguards on duty. A favorite among families. Parking by permit only

Food:
Watch surfers get first breaks at Ditch Plains while you eat breakfast at Ditch Witch (40 Deforest Road; no phone), a takeout wagon in the East Deck Motel parking lot. This popular, family-run stand whips up fantastic iced coffee and breakfast burritos, plus a killer sesame-noodle salad.
Lunch alfresco at the BYOB seafood shack Duryea's Lobster Deck overlooking Fort Pond Bay. Order a lobster roll or the broiled flounder with coleslaw and baked potato—a pager will signal when your food’s ready.
For early risers who want to head into town, you want to head to where all the locals are at Bird on the Roof.
Joni's is our go-to morning spot. It has not just good, but great organic, wholesome food. The laid-back picnic ready "sweet surf cafe" serves up fresh squeezed juices and creative sandwiches and wraps like the Zen Rabbit with mixed greens, avocado, goat cheese, tomato, onion, and calamata olives on a spinach tortilla. It may look packed but the line moves quickly and the food is worth it!
Navy Beach and its delicious fare served on the beach are worth hunting for, and it is refreshing to find a lunch menu that features ceviche, small plates and salads such as grilled watermelon with pork belly. Add a serving of fiery Mexican corn and a glass of Moët, and you are set for the day.
It could have been just about the music, or the sunset, or the drinks, but, The Surf Lodge is a magnet for foodies, too. Sit outside overlooking the water and soak it all in.
There is a little chunk of Americana on Rte 27 approaching Montauk. Called the Lobster Roll, or just LUNCH, it is a nostalgic roadside restaurant serving some decent shore comfort food. Yes, the lobster roll (which consists of lobster, mayo and celery on a hot dog bun) costs a bit but it’s tasty and the atmosphere is classic East Coast.
Our favorite seafood place in Montauk, Dave's Grill is simply amazing. Definitely worth the wait, especially outside on the deck sipping on a drink. Sit at the bar for an awesome meal while chatting with the great bartenders and other friendly locals, or at a table for a more private experience. Same day reservations (by phone only) from 4:15 p.m. Call (631) 668-9190.
